10-5 Bulletin

On this Homecoming Sunday, we greet with a hearty welcome Pastor Larry Hoffsis!   Pastor Hoffsis grew up on his parents’ farm near Sulphur Springs.  He was baptized, confirmed and ordained at nearby St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Ridgeton Road.  He has a Bachelor’s degree from Capital University, Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity degrees from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation of Notre Dame, Indiana.  Following graduation from seminary and before beginning his parish ministry, Pastor Hoffsis spent a year in Old Testament study at the University in Heidelberg, Germany.  He has served three parishes:  Associate Pastor of St. John Lutheran, Sidney, Ohio, Senior Pastor of Old Trinity Lutheran in Columbus, and finally Senior Pastor at Epiphany Lutheran in Dayton.  Epiphany grew to a congregation of 3,000 members and a weekly attendance of over 1000.  Upon retirement in 2000, Pastor Hoffsis was invited by the Synod of Mecklenburg to spend a year in the Lutheran churches in eastern Germany, especially in the area of congregational development.  Since 2002, Pastor Hoffsis serves Graceworks Lutheran Services as Mission Integration Consultant and his former Epiphany parish as Pastor Emeritus with responsibilities for senior ministry, global and local mission, and mission endowment.  He is married to Cindy, a retired music teacher and handbell director.  They have three children and six grandchildren.  Welcome to Good Hope, Pastor Larry and Cindy!

Following today’s service and meal, an outstanding video of the bell tower and the church bells will be shown in the auditorium.  You will see in detail how the bells have been renovated by Gene Heid and son, Nathan, with the help of Wilbert Peterman and employees of our local Ryder-Heil Bronze Inc.  The employees donated their time, labor, and materials to make the needed parts for the church bells.  The Aaron Atkinson family is with us today as representatives of the Ryder-Heil Bronze Company.  We express our deepest gratitude to Gene, Nathan, Wilbert and the employees of the Ryder-Heil Bronze Company for their expertise, time, and dedication to this nine-month restoration project.

Today’s service is broadcast live over radio station WBCO 1540 FM and is given in loving memory of Robert and Myrtle Keller by the Robert Long family.

The altar flowers are given in honor of Michael Metcalf and his 18th birthday on October 7 by his parents, Jim and Caroline Metcalf and his brother, Matthew.

The roses on the stairwell are given in loving memory of Mike Lady and in honor of Rylinn Edgington and Korey Koons and their baptisms by Janet Lady and family.

The rose on the altar is given in loving memory of Tyler James Stuckman who went to live with Jesus on October 5, 1992 by his grandparents, Jim and Vergene Stuckman.

The communion wine is given to the glory of God and in honor of the members of Good Hope Church who are age 80 and over by Jeannette Naufzinger.

The worship bulletins are given in loving memory of Bob Korner by his wife, Jean Korner.

We thank Millie Palenshus for baking today’s communion bread.

Today’s hymn, “We Shall Rejoice”, was originally created in celebration of Good Hope’s 150th anniversary on Reformation Sunday in 1992.  John Ylvisaker was commissioned by Good Hope to write the words and our own Patty Neff arranged the music. The theme of the 150th anniversary highlighted the scripture of Romans 12:12 which is part of today’s second scripture reading.  This beautiful hymn was created with Romans 12:12 as the central theme.  You will find the sheet music to it at the back of your hymnal.  Following the singing of “We Shall Rejoice”, please return the sheet music to its proper place in the back of your hymnal.

We greet our honored guests, those Good Hope members who are age 80 and over!  Our senior members are wearing an orange flower this morning and will be the guests of honor at today’s meal.

Take a look today at the great items of Good Hope memorabilia in the historical room!  The historical room is located across the hall from the offices.  We thank Ruth Clem for keeping it tidy and up-to-date!

Applause!  Applause!  We thank Mary Scott and her helpers for the beautiful Homecoming decorations!  We also thank the Palmer House for today’s meal.  Thanks to all those folks who have helped make today so special!
